Sunbird Search for A Star chops off eight: Malawi Legends Week on cards

Eight of contestants in the on-going Sunbird Search for A Star singing contest on Saturday were voted out of the show after previously putting up unimpressive performance that was rated bellow average.

The eviction show, which is first since the launch of the competition a forthright ago, was held at Lilongwe Sunbird Hotel in the Capital City.

This time around, however, most of contestants managed to restore dashed hopes as they laboured to prove they are ready for the ride in the million Kwacha competition.

Those that have faced the chop are Lekani Folotiya, Mathew Osman, Lizzie Chisima, Asante Ndalama, Tayamika Mwanyama, Elijah Gausi, Thoko Luwe, Chinsisi Banda and Chiyanjano Maimba.

It was, a disappointing, though, for Osman and Maimba who had given one of the night’s best performances that forced the audience to back them up when they were named for eviction.

The audience didn’t know that the eviction was based on the previous show’s performance.

Project Chairman, Felix Njawala was impressed with some contestants who showed improvement and hailed the SMS Voting, which he said represented true reflection of the show.

Njawala said: “Almost all contestants showed a sad face and tears could be seen in there eyes as they went back stage, but their colleagues comforted them. Some were nervous but many were not”.

Malawi’s Legend Week

Meanwhile, Njawala disclosed that, this time around, contestants were given difficult songs in readiness for Malawi’s Legends Week next month.

During the Legends Week, the contestants are expected to perform songs done by Malawi legends in the likes of Evison Matafale, Daniel Kachamba and Stornard Lungu among others.

“People may think songs by such legendary artists are simple but they’re difficult and they can only be done by matured artists. We hope people will have fun during that day-16th December in Lilongwe-since its all Malawian songs on the card,” added Njalawa.

Apart from urban artist, Piksy performing, the audience was treated to a surprise performance by one Dan Lufani who is currently based in Lilongwe.

Next eviction is scheduled for November 2nd at Sunbird Mount Soche Hotel with remaining 16 set to battle it for the next round.

The contest is being beamed on MBCtv and Times television and people can vote for their favourite contestants by sending SMS to 50505.

Formally named E-Wallet, the competition has been adopted by Sunbird Tourism with this year’s winner expected to pocket K500,000 as a grand prize with a second and third runners up getting K300,000 and K200,000 respectively.

The competition has been devised to find new singing talent-unlike last year where some dancers were incorporated.
