Teenager Ishmael Wadi arrested for possessing fake TCs

Police in Mangochi have arrested a teenager for being found in possession of fake Travelers’ Cheques (TCs).

Mangochi Police Public Relations Officer, Rodrick Maida confirmed the arrest of 18 year old Ishmael Wadi from Chimala village in the area of Senior Traditional Authority (T/A) Mponda. He was apprehended on his way to South Africa.

According to Maida, Wadi was arrested following a tip from the public which led to the mounting of a road block in the area of Senior T/A Chimwala.

“Police intercepted the suspect as they mounted a road block within the area where people tipped them that the people would go through. They found the TCs after conducting a thorough search on the suspect,” he added.

Maida further said the fake TCs bore stamps of NBS Bank and First Merchant Bank.

“Authorities from the two banks are yet to come and confirm the authenticity of the stamps,” the police publicist said, adding that the case will proceed immediately after authentication process.

Wadi who is currently on remand, according to Maida, will appear before the court soon to answer to a charge forging official documents which is contrary to section 359 of the penal code.

The offence attracts a maximum punishment of 10 years imprisonment when one is found liable and convicted of the same.

Meanwhile, police have also arrested three transporters in connection to Wadi’s case.  –Malawi News Agency
