Tembo says solidly behind Chakwera

Former Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president John Tembo on Sunday told party supporters in Kasungu that he is solidly behind new president of MCP, Dr Lazarus Chakwera.

Speaking at Ntchalachala ground in the tobacco growing central region district of Kasungu, Tembo said he was pleased that the MCP convention held at Natural Resources College (NRC) in the capital, Lilongwe a week ago, elected former Malawi Assemblies of God president the Reverend Dr Lazarus Chakwera to be the party’s torchbearer in the 2014 presidential elections.

“He was elected at a democratic convention and the elections were credible,” Tembo told the crowds.

“Chakwera has my support to rejuvenate MCP and lead it to power in next year’s elections,” said Tembo, one of the longest serving politicians in MCP as well as in Malawi.

“I am fully-committed to back Chakwera,” he said.

The leader of opposition in parliament said he was confident MCP under Chakwera and his team will win the elections next year.
