Floating the Kwacha was the best idea. At the time when we had run out of reserves there was nothing that could be done different. Now we have room to fix something without crashing the economy. The author is simply naïve not to recognize that conditions have changed.

Munthali has it wrong, this type of economic thinking is for hand to mouth (chakudya chalero) Chuka was right in 2012 to float the kwacha this made life difficult but all Malawians appreciatew the turn around of the economy in 2013 FUEL, FOREX, were available and business that were collapsing rose-up

With our economy’s fragility and deficient production, it was a mistake floating the Kwacha. Managing the economy is managing people’s daily livelihoods, therefore one, especially the reserve bank governor need not be too theoretical

The only rxporters we have and have had for the last fifty years are tobacco expprters- and a lityle bit of tea and sugar here and there. It is a sad testament and concrete proof that e Malawians have no brains. We have no creativity. We have no innovation. We are job seekers who dont know how to create businesses let alone industries for export
Look at the mew African Tigers- Rwanda, Kenya, Botwana, Ghana and Mozambique etc.
Dont blame Chuka. Just look in the mirror.

What garbage. The extreme measures that the government took at that time were the only sensible response to the extreme environment that existed then. They worked: brought back fuel, business and donor confidence etc. But they were never written in stone. No evolution has taken place. Chuka has not made any about turn: he’s able to do what he has announced now because circumstances have changed and he has room in which to maneuvre. Why is it difficult for some people to see this? Chuka is one of the best governors the RBM has ever. He works in extremely difficult… Read more »

Bravo! Bravo! Excellente! Mr. Munthali. This Chuka boy is full of shit. The biggest enemy of Malawian economy is the Malawians themselves. The Late Big Kahuna had always said Malawi will be poor so long as the currency will be free flow.

the bank (RBM) is waking up now. theoretical projections must always be adjusted with the practical experience. in Malawi financial markets the commercial banks are in a cartel where there is hardly any competition in the products they are offering the public. to be modest about it, one can say banks in Malawi have become authorized thieves. to be brunt about it, one can say worse things.

There are no countries that have left their countries to float. You must always have some grip on your currency. Learn from the Chinese.
