Three-year-old girl drowns in Lake Malawi

A three -year- old girl, Sakina Kachere, was found dead on Monday, after drowning in Lake Malawi where she had gone without parental guidance.

Salima Police Publicist, Gift Chitowe said  the girl had drowned in the Lake at Kandeni Village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Ndindi in the district.

Chitowe said the deceased was sent to the lake in the company of other kids by their parents to clean house hold utensils, but the guardians did not go with the children to watch them.

“According to information we gathered at the scene, the children were left without any mature person to watch over them.

“After they cleaned the utensils they started swimming and in the process the unfortunate happened and the deceased went missing,” said Chitowe

The body was later on Tuesday found floating on the banks of Luwazi River where the river opens into Lake Malawi.

Chitowe said police findings have revealed that the incident could have been avoided had the children been in company of an older person.

In another development, Salima Police are looking for unknown criminals suspected of murdering a 67- year- old, Shadreck Mbofana.

Chitowe said the unknown men killed the victim at his garden at Mphonje village TA Khombedza on Monday.

“The deceased was injured in the head and hospital postmortem revealed that the deceased died due to head injuries,” said Chitowe.

According to Chitowe said the suspects invaded Mbofana’s garden to steal Mangoes.
