Three-year-old Malawi girl killed by hyena
A three – year-old girl has disappeared in Mangochi after she was attacked and devoured by a hyena, a source told the Malawi News Agency on Monday.
Henry Pota said the incident happened on Saturday, December 1 at Kwitanda village in the area of Traditional Authority Chowe in the district at about 6 O’clock in the evening.
“The girl was playing with her friends in the village near a goat kraal when suddenly a hyena appeared and grabbed the deceased and went away,” Pota said.
He said villagers followed the hyena in an attempt to rescue the little unsuspecting girl to no avail.
Pota added that the sympathizers only found a pair of pants and a lower jaw of a human child within Mtuwa Hills about a kilometer away from the village.
Mangochi Police Public Relations Officer, Inspector Rodrick Maida confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Ajira Ajison who came from Kwitanda village in the area of T/A Chowe in the district.
In a related development, Maida said during the dawn of Sunday, December 2 a herd of hyenas descended the same Mtuwa Hills to Kwitanda village but were scared away by the noise of villagers before they could pounce on anything.
Maida said there was not any foul play suspected in the incident and that the police in collaboration with parks and wildlife officials are on day and night surveillance of the area to avoid further loss of life.
