Thugs poison truck driver to steal 700 bags of maize

Three suspected criminals raided a truck driver and poisoning him before hijacking 700 bags of maize in Kasungu district.

Police have since arrested one of the three suspects identified as Redson Mzunga, 23, of Mponda Village, T/A Msamala in Balaka district and has been charged with an offence of robbery with violence.

His two accomplices, only identified by their first names as Mada and Kamkubi, are still at large.

The driver has been identified as 42-year-old Kingsley Kaphantengo from Namoni Village, T/A Chiwere in Dowa district and is an employee of FERMAK Trading.

The suspects reportedly ambushed Kaphantengo and injected him with poisonous substances before dumping him in a bush a few kilometers from Kasungu Boma.

The driver reported the matter to police after gaining consciousness, according to Kasungu Police Officer-in-Charge, John Nyondo.

The driver was ferrying the maize from Trans Globe warehouse in Lilongwe to Mzuzu ADMARC when he met his fate.

Nyondo said after loading the bags, Kaphantengo reportedly stopped at Kanengo where he gave a lift to the three unsuspected criminals who said were going to Kasungu Town.

But just after crossing Kasungu Dam, the criminals requested the driver to stop before attacking him.

“They administered the victim with Ketamine Hydrochloride Injection, and thereafter dumped him in the bush before driving away with the vehicle,” explained Nyondo.

Nyondo said the truck has also been found with all the 700 bags of maize including other items in it intact.

He also said at the scene of crime, police discovered a 50mg bottle of Ketamine Hydrochloride and a syringe which is suspected to have been used to inject the driver.
