Thyolo leads in suicide cases, says Malawi Police

Thyolo has been singled out by the police as the leading district in suicide cases in southern region and law enforcers are attributing this to rising marital problems in the tea growing district.

Southern region police spokesman James Kadadzera said the commercial city of Blantyre is closely trailing Thyolo in suicide cases.

“Suicide notes we recover show that marital problems are the leading cause of suicides in Thyolo. We urge people to consult marriage councillors, traditional leaders, church leaders or the police whenever they are faced with these problems.

“We have fully fledged departments at each police station to deal with such issues,” said Kadadzera.

He second the second cause of one’s hanging himself or herself are diseases, saying some people do not want to face prolonged sickness and decide to terminate life before it gets harder and tougher.

Police spokesman said this was misconception as some people have managed to recover and are key to the country’s development.

People who resort to suicide when dealing with any kind of life challenge are generally those who never value their life on set and most of all cowardice.

Blame it on poverty and food insecurity and making divorce a tedious affair. If it does not work, let the couples separate on fair terms. Divorce is the relief if the marriage does not… Read more »

This is a preliminary report by the police. What is the relationship between tea growing and marital related suicides in the district? Second, HIV, Diabetes, Hypertension and malignancies are some of the examples of diseases that are almost incurable, which one? And why Thyolo?
