Hospital authorities say they expect the machine to go a long way in reducing child mortality in the border district.

Mulanje Mission Hospital has a Nursery Section that cares for premature and low birth weight babies. Many of such kind of babies have reduced chances of survival if they do not have the right facilities to support them during this crucial stage of their lives.

Speaking during the handover ceremony on Thursday.  TNM’s Head of Blantyre Region, David Nyirenda said the donation was in line with the company’s policy of promoting child health services in the country.

“Being a company owned and operated by Malawians, we believe in supporting the communities in which we operate. The health sector is one of the sectors that we are investing our money in because we realize that only health people can positively contribute to the socio- economic development of this country,” said Nyirenda.

Nyirenda said the health sector has numerous challenges such that Government alone cannot afford to tackle them and requires private sector intervention.

“While government is trying to address these challenges facing the health sector, TNM believes that the private sector too can play its noble part,” he said.

In her remarks Principal Nursing Officer Tabu Gonani thanked TNM for the donation.

“ We see about 70 new baby born in a month and others are referred from Mulanje District Hospital to this hospital as such we have been lacking this kind of machine and today it is a great day to  have it”  said Gonani .

Gonani said the mission nursery caters the whole district of Mulanje

The donation of radiant warmer machine at Mulanje mission hospital comes months after the mobile phone giant handed over a MK7.5 million solar power project to maternity ward of Trinity Hospital in Nsanje. TNM Social Investment policy mainly targets education, environment, maternal health, child health and care for vulnerable groups, among others.

Over the past three years, the company donated a power generator to Thekerani Health Centre Maternity Ward in Thyolo and supplied beds, mattresses, linen and blankets at South Lunzu Health Centre in Blantyre, supplied varous health need at Chikwawa District Hospital, Karonga District Hospital, Mzimba District Hospital, Chintheche Health Centre, among others.

Mulanje Mission Hospital was established in 1928 by the Church of Scotland and it sees 3,000 deliveries annually.
