anaMalawi government says in order to encourage economic growth, it will boost up the tourism industry and a five star hotel will be constructed in the capital as well as rehabilitation of the Kamuzu International Airport.

Minister of Tourism, Wild life and Culture, Anna Kachikho said tourism is another vital instrument to the national economy and that it can easily earn foreign exchange, as many people from outside may come to the country to see the wildlife therefore bringing foreign currency into the country.

The Minister also said, apart from attracting tourists, the industry also plays a role in attracting investors who after touring the country may want to invest.

“Tourism is not only about attracting tourist to come and see the wildlife we have, but also attract investors to invest with us and by so doing the economy of the country is improved,” she said.

She therefore said, as she heads the ministry she will make sure that the wildlife is protected, maintained and that enough fund is given to the ministry for its proper operations.

“The Ngwazi’s vision is to improve the economy of the country and since tourism is one sector for economy, I will fight hard to assist the president to achieve his vision” said the minister.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister, Ken Kandodo disclosed that Chinese contractors will build Five Star hotel opposite Sunbird Capital Hotel in Lilongwe after parliament authrorised government to borrow ¥630 (US$90 million) from the Export- Import Bank of China.

Kachikho said the building of the five star hotel is a good development to the country as it will be unique and will be build within the capital hill as the Lilongwe town plan shows.

A malawi amalawi achina achikulire ndi anzanu! Do you know that there will be a conference facility attached to this hotel? Do you Know that our collegues i.e Tanzania have benefitted alot from conference tourism? Do you know how much many international conferences Malawi has missed out because of lack of adequate conference facility? Conference Tourism my dear is easy money? Where did you get the facts that Government will manage the hotel? For God’s sake this hotel will be managed by a private company once completed. Our economists chonde chonde! musatichititse manyazi with your aguments without proper research!

    • Achikulire, UK says:

Steve Kambeta, thanks for your comment, the discussion is not to have or not to have the hotel! We all agree we need to have 5 star class level hotels. Conference facilties are std with this class of hotels so we all agree with that notion.
The issue my brother is how best to finance it. Who funds it and in partcicular the financing structure of it. Don’t gross over on this detail. If the govt is playing a faciliting role by encouraging and providing assets as a guarantor then perfect! Bingo! we are happy, can you confirm that Steve since you are in the ‘KNOW’?. What we do not want to see is the govt borrowing money (tax payers) to do these sort of things thereby blowing the external debt on less critical issues. We have been cheated for over 45 years with nothing to show for as a nation while other countries who started level with Malawi at independence in 1964 are way into stratosphere in terms of their economic GDP growth eg Taiwan,South Korea,Singapore etc and then closer to home Mozambique’s economy (GDP grown to $10bn compared to our meagre $4bn) – a war torn country- has overtaken us Malawians with 45 years of peace, can you believe it? So Steve, it is not about being emotional, as intellectuals we must be able to debate these things. If you have the research details about what is going on then please by all means provide it. I will be the first person to thank you for your great work if it all adds up to a coherent picture. Its my future, its our future we have to have a say in the direction things are going and not repeating the past 45 years of doldrums and grow the economy on average a meagre 10%, we need to grow the economy$10bn a year to catch up!! As a citizen I demand that my Malawi govt which I support do more for us its citizens!

Steve Kambeta, Malawi has the worst telecommunication infrastructure by the standards of a 45year old contry. After all, why Lilongwe instead of developing the northern region lakeshore areas, and the road network up north???
Even Mzuzu airport is another option. If Anna Kachikho’s ministry wanted to venture into a tourism project, why could she not think of the government investing in good roads along the lakeshore regions to make touring these areas easy???
Or, if the government were serious about development, why not start the Shire-Zambezi Waterway Project?? Was it a bait for votes??? Were we tricked??? Shire-Zambesi project has revenue to the equivalents of billions of kwacha and Bingu knew he could win our hearts by mentioning it. Mr kambeta, open your eyes up and make a decision.

The builders of this hotel are already sourced and it the same cronies who will share the ill-gains in your own read eyes. national wealth is a great investment to all of us but some idiotic brains are denying us the right to wealth as a nation. Iweyo nfiye amene ukutichititsa manyazi pano.

  4. MUKUNAMA A MASOAMBETA

You have mentioned that the Hotel will be managed by a private company.

    >Why is the government borrowing money which at the end of the will be paid by my tax.

    >Would you be kind to enlighten us the name of the alleged private company?

    >why is this company not in a position to borrow money if it will run the five star Hotel?

    >Kodi kapena mwayamba kusolola?
