Tragedy hits Mafco: 3 players die in accident

Three players from Mafco FC of the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) have died in a road accident with three others getting injured after a truck they were traveling in overturned near Benga trading centre between Nkhotakota and Salima, Nyasa Times has learnt.

The deceased players are Sadan Mangwere, Chifuniro Phiri and Gift Mphonde and those injured include Gift Soko, Cyrus Phiri and Jimmy Nzunga.

Chairman for the military side Captain Chitumbo Chirambo told Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) in an interview that the accident happened between 22:00 and 23:00 hours on Thursday, August 22, 2013 as the
players were traveling back to Salima after being released from camp on disciplinary grounds.

After Wednesday’s Carlsberg Cup quarterfinal defeat at the hands of Moyale Barracks, Mafco stayed put in Salima preparing for the visit of fellow military side Kamuzu Barracks and Epac in the TNM Super League at the weekend but the said six players were released from camp after reportedly going on a drinking binge after the Wednesday match.
