Two arrested in Karonga for illegal fuel sales
Two men are in police custody in Malawi’s northern border district of Karonga for possessing 140 liters of diesel worth about 119,476.00 without a license.
District Station Officer Almakio Daka identified the suspects as Spear Nyondo 24 years of Katolola village in the area of paramount chief Kyungu and Kamazani Kondowe aged 27 from Mwafilaso village of the same area.
“We were tipped by well wishers on Monday that some men where keeping diesel in one of the big buildings at a bus stage and there we found eight gallons of diesel in the building and some were selling around the place,” said Daka.
He said the practice is very common in Karonga and “we have fears that one day the diesel may cause accident because they sell the oil in public places such as depot where in case of fire a lot of things can be damaged.”
Daka also said: “we try to advise minibus owners and drivers to void buying fuel from unlicensed traders.”
Meanwhile, one of the minibus drivers said fuel from vendors is better off than of the filling stations in terms of prices and convenience.
“We find it cheap to buy fuel or diesel which is around us because we can buy it on credit. It is also cheap. Imagine at filling station is about K853 per liter while from vendors is just K700 also they are readily available,” he said.
