Two charged over football violence that claimed life of a fan
Malawi Police said two people were detained and charged after one fan was killed and 20 more injured during skirmishes at Malawi Super League game on Saturday in Balaka.
Fans from Mighty Wanderers and Silver Strikers clashed at the stadium in Balaka.
Balaka Police spokesperson Joseph Sauka said they interrogated two people suspected to be key suspects in instigating the confrontations.
He said the two are expected to appear in court on Monday.
The clashes were instigated by Silver Strikers’s fans and the suspects are said to be the supporters of Silver.
Sauka said the supporters who answer charges of murder and conduct likely to cause breach of peace and unlawful wounding.
Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has since said the incident was unfortunate and it will conduct a thorough investigation.
“We do not expect death in the game as beautiful as soccer,” Sulom general secretary Williams Banda said.
“This is very shocking and we will make sure that all those involved are brought before the court of law.
“We have information on several more fans that were caught on camera and submitted such to the police.
“We hope they will do a good job because it is only when perpetrators are punished that we can end violence.”
