Phalombe police Publicist, Augustus Nkhwazi told Nyasa Times the two died due to suffocation as they could not manage to swim.

“According to the mother of the two, the deceased left home at around 14:00 hours and went to swim in a bore-pit (place where gravel was dug out) located within the village,” explained Nkhwazi.

It is alleged that the two drowned in the waters as they failed to swim. Their colleagues could not help them out as they also could not swim.

“One of the children rushed to the parents of the deceased kids and notified them about the incident. When the parents rushed to rescue the children, they found them dead. The matter was reported to Police,” added Nkhwazi.

He said a team of Police officers visited the scene accompanied by medical officials from Phalombe Health Centre. Postmortem indicates they died of suffocation.

Meanwhile, police has appealed to the general public to ensure that children are never allowed to go swimming without supervision to avoid such incidences.
