Two people killed and three in critical condition following fatal vehicle crash in Zomba

Two people have died in Zomba district south-east of Malawi in a road accident at Chikupila near Chinamwali township.
Police have identified the deceased as Chrissy Chinseu and George Odinala.Police spokeserson for eastern region Inspector Joseph Sauka says the deceased were travelling in a three tonner lorry registration number CA 116 – 532 which was driven by Madalitso Maluwa 36, and had 35 passengers on board with their goods and were heading Thyolo from Makanjira.

“Upon arrival at Chikupila, the driver failed to control the vehicle and hit the offside of the road before it overturned. Due to the impact two people died on the spot and thirty four including the driver have been rushed to Zomba Central Hospital for treatment after sustaining injuries.”

Sauka said while Police are still investigating the cause of the accident, it is suspected that the driver was sleeping.

Police in the region is therefore appealing to drivers not to drive vehicles when tired and not to pick passengers on top of goods.

zoona ndithu kudusa pa roadblock osagwidwa mpaka kuchita ngozi and loosing two lives??? My mother Malawi with poor police officers on roadblocks! So it means even on looker police officers along the road could not intervene??

The problem is that when the police officers saw the vehicle coming, they started making budgets for they knew that ndalama zapezeka, laponda la mphawi ndi ma salary akumalowa pa 38 wa!

Its ridiculous when we lose lives recklessly like this. This car had passed more than 10 roadblocks from Makanjila to Zomba; how did the so called traffic police allow it to pass with all those people “on top” of goods? This is evidence of the high corruption perpetrated by police in Malawi.
