Two jailed 25 years for robbery with violence: To answer murder charge

Two young men have been given a stiff jail sentence by the Lilongwe High Court for assault and stealing a motor vehicle valued K3 million.

The two, Yamikani Zingalume Lashan aged 23 and 25-year-old Gerald Basitoni have been slapped with 25 years imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL) each for the offence of robbery with violence contrary to Section 301 of the Penal Code.

According to information presented in court, Lashan and Basitoni committed the offence on 06th April, 2014 at Area 23 in Lilongwe , where they assaulted to death Dinna Kadyanji using metal objects on her head and robbed off a motor vehicle registration number BS386 Toyota Voxy valued at K3 million.

Lashan was working as a security guard for Kadyanji (deceased) and he connived with his accomplice to commit the crime.

The two were convicted after full trial by Lilongwe principal magistrate, Patrick Chirwa, who returned the matter to the high court for sentence, which was upon submission by the state prosecutor Levison Mangani, who submitted that the accused persons deserved a higher sentence than the jurisdiction of the magistrate court.

According to the prosecutors, Lashan and Basitoni are yet to answer the murder charge in relation to the same case.

Lashan hails from Mbuna Village in Traditional authority Masumbankhunda in Lilongwe while Basitoni comes from Nanchida village in traditional authority Chimutu in Lilongwe.

So…wait a minute….some hauls away from the government millions of Kwachas and gets less than 10 years. Senzani was released in less than 2 years. But these guys stole a Voxy which has been recovered and they get 2 and half decades….(sindikukamba za murder eti). Is it because they are guards while enawo they are white colar criminals? Generally that is the trend….koma awo a cashgate who have cost the Malawians some lives through lack of medication….aaaah

Abwana, it’s not about the money, it’s the severity of the case. Imagine your own guard conniving with another person to rob you? Forget about the killing.

Car jackers are ruthless people. I had the experience and was horrible. I feel grieved with the lady who lost her life in this manner. May God fight her cause.
