Two passengers killed in Balaka minibus accident

Two people are confirmed dead and a conductor missing after a mini bus road accident which happened last night in Balaka district in eastern Malawi.

Balaka Police publicist Josehph Sauka says the accident happened at Chikombola along Balaka – Liwonde road when the driver of the Toyota Hiace Mini Bus registration number MH 6124, Mustafa Tambala 21, failed to control the vehicle after a rear tyre busted.

Sauka says the mini bus was coming from Lilongwe to Liwonde with 18 passengers on board and upon arrival at Chikombola, its rear tyre busted and the driver swerved to the right hand side of the road where it overturned killing two passengers on the spot and several others injured.

“Most of the victims sustained minor injuries and were treated at Balaka District Hospital while two sustained serious injuries. They have been referred to Zomba and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital respectively. The driver escaped unhurt while the conductor is nowhere to be seen,” says Sauka.

According to Sauka, one of the deceased has been identified as Shalom Mwale 28 who comes from Zomba but was residing in Lilongwe.

“The other one is a male person and brown in complexion. At the time of the accident wore a khaki pair of trousers, white long sleeved shirt and brown sandals. His body is being kept at Balaka District Hospital Mortuary.

Meanwhile, the driver is in Police custody and is expected to appear before court where he will answer a case of causing death due to reckless driving.

Why a case of reckless driving when it was a tyre that got burst? What about the parliamentary speaker’s case that has been treated as fatal accident. This is a case of treating some people more equal than others. An accident is an accident.

The traffic police should also be checking tyres.

  16. Chiyabwe says:

Thats a mechanical fault why arresting the driver? Tinamuvumbitsirapo JB mvula disrupting H.E’s speech.Wathuyo mumumasule muzamuitane alongside the speaker

All this is due to corrupt police, you pocket ma K1000 from minibuses that are not roadworthy and allow them to pass your strategic check points, you are therefore the right people to appear before court for causing death through corrupt practices, shame on you!look at the tires

  23. The incident happened in the company of Mr Speaker Richard Msowoya did not mean getting arrested so why with this min bus driver who was involved in a common bursting incident at Chikombola IM Balaka District?

  24. Patyc says:

PRO, can you find out more from traffic personnel before concluding that it is reckless driving

  25. Memory says:

    Balaka too much eishh

  26. Blessed Banda says:

Assuming the tyres were worn out then police officers who were manning roadblocks are the ones who should be arrested for allowing unroad worthy vehicle pass through all the police stops along the road. Money exchange hands between police officers and drivers/conductors of minibuses and taxis in Malawi.

  27. Alungwana says:

And the police spokesman gathered the courage to say tyre bursting is reckless driving? If the tyre was in bad condition, how many road blocks are from Lilongwe to Liwonde?

  28. Patyc says:

Tyre bursting, is it reckless driving? I wonder

  29. Nabetha says:

What is the reason for arresting the driver? I think the driver needs a lot of proffessional counselling due to trauma that he is having right now. The speaker of parliament was involved in road accident over the weekend and a cylist died on the spot, but Mr. Msowoya never got arrested for a common reason that this was just an accident. The driver of the minibus didn’t plan for this accident, therefore he must be released without being charged. For the deceased let me say may your souls rest in eternal peace, and for the injured, get well soon.

  30. The real ujeni says:

How can it be reckless driving when I was the car wheel bust that caused the mini bus driver to lose control. Malawi has tiny tarmac roads, this is one area that is causing lots of road accidents

  31. mussa says:

Wow why this year alot of min bus accidents, may the Almighty God comforts the bereaved families.
