Two students from same family drown in Balaka

As rains continue to cause havoc in most parts of Malawi two, people of the same family have died in the eastern district of  Balaka after being drowned police have confirmed.

Balaka police spokesperson sub-inspector Joseph Sauka says the two met their fate when they were trying to cross over flooded Mfulanjovu stream when they were coming from School.

According to the nephew of the deceased Andrew Bwanali, the deceased Chifundo Ajusa 17 was a form 3 student at Kankao Community Day Secondary School while his brother Kelvin Ajusa was in Standard 5 at Mfulanjovu School.

“On this day, they were coming from School when they found that the stream they were supposed to cross had over flooded and the two did not want to wait. They then held each other arms and started crossing the stream but unfortunately they were washed away by the running water and the body of Kelvin was found the very same day while Chifundo’s body was found a day later”.

Postmortem conducted at Balaka District Hospital revealed that death was caused due to suffocation.

Both Chifundo and Kelvin Ajusa were coming from Mombo village, Traditional Authority Chanthunya in Balaka distrist.

Balaka Police say this is the third incident of drowning in the district since the onset of rainy season

Two a 21 year old man Mdala Nicks was washed away on Christmas day after he attempted to cross the flooding river while he was drunk and another incident where a 2 year old child was drowned in a shallow well at his home.

Mean while Police in the district is appealing to the public not to cross over flooded rivers or streams to avoid sudden deaths caused by drowning.
