UDF calls beer bill lawsuit work of detractors, accuses Nyasa Times

Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF)  has reacted to a story that a Mzuzu based small scale bar owner has asked the party to repay a MK69, 450.00 bill for booze for its  Yellow Youth for Change (YYC),Mzuzu University wing imbibed on or about the 14th April, 2013 at Mzuzu University Hall.

Nyasa Times reported on Monday that Morton Gondwe, who has since closed the bar, through lawyers Jivason and Company, Gondwe has  given UDF a seven day ultimatum to pay MK69, 450.00 plus MK100,000 indemnity costs.

Jivason and Company further said if they do not receive the said total sum within the period, “We shall immediately commence legal proceedings against the Registered Trustees of the United Democratic Front, where we shall claim the total sum plus damages for loss of business and further legal costs.”

But reacting, UDF spokesman Ken Ndanga dismissed the story  describing it as  “handcraft of our detractors who are losing sleep with the popularity of the UDF party and its 2014 presidential candidate Atupele Muluzi.”

Ndanga: It's not true

Ndanga said: “They know he is a clean person and they are doing everything to throw mud on him.”

The UDF spokesman claimed in a statement that the ruling People’s Party propaganda machinery was all out to tarnish the image of Atupele, accusing Nyasa Times of being part of it.

“It is unfortunate that the Nyasa Times is being used by the PP propaganda squad to spread lies about the UDF party and its leadership,” said Ndanga.

“Atupele Muluzi has never sponsored any event where alcoholic beverages were served, this story should be treated with the contempt it deserves,” he added.

“Let them prove that the UDF party indeed  ordered such beverages because our records do not show anything to that effect.”
