UDF says Chikago belonged to PP before joining MCP
The opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) has clarified that former Malawi ambassador to Japan, Dr John Chikago defected to the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) from ruling People’s Party (PP).
UDF spokesperson Ken Ndanga says contrary to assertions that Chikago has resigned from the party to join the MCP, “the truth of the matter is that he left the UDF party long time ago and joined the People’s Party (PP)”.
Ndanga says Chikago was actually introduced as a member of PP by President Joyce Banda at a political rally held at Madzanje in central district of Ntcheu.
“He comes from the same constituency with UDF Secretary General, Kandi Padambo and former MCP Secretary General Chris Daza now cabinet minister. His frustration can easily be traced from this scenario,” says Ndanga.
He therefore says any information to the contrary “should be treated with the contempt it deserves.”
Announcing his defection at a news conference on Friday Chikago said he has joined MCP because he is attracted by Chakwera’s new leadership which he said gives “hope “ describing the former president of Assemblies of God church in Malawi as “God sent” leader for Malawi beyond 2014..
Meanwhile, UDF said it has welcomed withdraw of party membership by its Deputy Publicity Secretary, Chimangeni who has joined PP.
Ndanga said UDF is not surprised that “PP is able to attract some politicians to their camp using cash-gate proceeds.”
