UDF settles MK100,000 booze debt

United Democratic Front (UDF) has finally settled a MK69, 450.00 bill for booze and related costs which the Party’s Yellow Youth for Change (YYC), Mzuzu University wing incurred on or about the 14th April, 2013 at Mzuzu University Hall but defaulted payment.

The Party’s Youths brazenly invaded a make shift bar that was set outside the venue of its meeting and scrambled for beer callously proclaiming that UDF Presidential candidate Atupele Muluzi had already paid for it.

Unfortunately, Muluzi had not bought the beer.

Last month Sheriffs in Mzuzu seized office furniture from the Party’s Regional office in Mzuzu to force the Party to honour the debt.

Ndanga: Had played down the story

When Nyasa Times broke the story in July 2013, UDF Spokesperson Ken Ndanga accused it of peddling propaganda aimed at tarnishing the Party as electioneering for the 2014 is heating up.

“The story is a handcraft of our detractors who are losing sleep with the popularity of UDF and Atupele Muluzi. They know he is a clean person and they are doing everything to throw mud on him.” Ndanga said then.

A Mzuzu based small scale bar owner, Morton Gondwe, who has since closed his bar, dragged the once ruling party to Court after he unsuccessfully sought his cash to no avail.

Gondwe through his Mzuzu based Lawyers Jivason and Company initially sought MK69, 450.00 plus MK100,000 indemnity costs.

However, the party negotiated to pay MK100,000 after duly accepting responsibility for the behaviour of its Mzuzu University wing.

“They have paid the money through our lawyers,” said  Gondwe and his lawyers have confirmed.
