UDF to give youth group new face: Launches Malawi tree planting scheme

Malawi’s opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) party says it is committed give a new face to its youths by encouraging them to a leading role in national development activities.

The party’s new Secretary-General Kandi Padambo said this at a tree planting ceremony in Ndirande, Blantyre organized by the ‘Yellow Youth for Change’ a youth group affiliated to the party.

The UDF youth launched a tree planting scheme to boost efforts to improve the country’s environment.

Padambo told a sizable crowd that gathered at the foot of Ndirande mountain that the party was happy that the ‘Agenda for Change’ message championed by UDF youthful presidential candidate Atupele Muluzi was working , saying  the recent development and charity initiatives by the party youths grouping was testimony that the youths are indeed embracing change.

‘’ We are happy as a party that as youth you are very supportive of our agenda where we are saying that we should change the way we have been doing politics in the past’’ said Padambo.

The UDF party Chief Executive pledged for total support to the youths grouping so that in the end they will be able to change the mindset of the youths and at the same time help rebuild the image of the party youth department.

He said under the new UDF, the youth in the party will be given opportunities to realize their full potential and talents for the good of the party and the country.

‘’We want our youths to be different and my presence here is to demonstrate that we mean business,” said Padambo

He said the UDF party is worried that Malawi is not doing enough to replant trees and that some parts of the country are fast becoming deserts.

Padambo said the UDF will mobilize all its members and supporters to take an active role during this year’s tree planting season.

Chairperson of the groping, Dalitso Mmadi assured the party boss that under the new UDF the youths will strive to give a good name to the party by initiating and participating in national development activities.

His deputy Aisha Mercy Kazembe said: “UDF youth members are absolutely delighted that they had the opportunity to contribute towards improving the environment.”

The function was grace by Chief Makata of the area who said was pleased that the UDF is encouraging its youth to take part in development activities.

During the festive season the group went to Mlambe Hospital in Blantyre where they cheered the sick and donated an assortment of items to the patients.
