UK Malawi Achievers Awards set for March 29: Nominations open

Outstanding diaspora Malawians and organisations be recognised for their larger-than-life individual brilliance, selfless commitment and hard work within their communities in UK and their contributions to their country at the inaugural Malawi Achievers awards red carpet ceremony to be held on March 29, 2014 at the Leicester Marriott Hotel in Leicester City, organisers have announced.

Hosted by the Malawi Association UK (MAUK) an umbrella body for all Malawians in the UK, the prestigious Malawi Achievers Awards (MAA) aims at giving recognition to exceptional benign Malawians for their the stupendous accomplishments from across all the business and professional spectrum within the Malawian communities both abroad and at home.

MAA Project Coordinator Felix Banda, who is also Secretary General of Malawi Association UK, told Nyasa Times that the main objective of the MAA is to recognise and reward Malawi’s finest people who are making a positive difference to the Malawian community in the UK.

“We decided to introduce the Malawian Achievers awards as a way to acknowledge and recognise fellow Malawian citizens who are doing exceptional and outstanding work in their communities and to show a token of appreciation to such people, charitable organisations and groups from here in UK that are making a positive difference in Malawi,” said Banda.

Banda added that the Malawi Association UK and its partners also through the awards would like to bring Malawians and friends of Malawi from all walks of life together to share ideas and knowledge, networking and also to promote Malawian culture especially among the younger generation.

“We would like to use the awards ceremony as a vehicle to bring unity among Malawians in the UK while at the same time celebrating and recognising distinguished Malawians for their concerted efforts and services in their communities and for their country.

“We would like to acknowledge and appreciate those Malawians who push the boundaries to succeed, help others and in the process country make their country, the Warm Heart of Africa, Malawi proud,” explained Banda.

The awards ceremony which is a family event will held at the Marriott Hotel in Leicester (Grove Park, 5 Smith Way, Enderby, Leicester LE19 SW) from 6:00 pm on the dot, prompt and is expected to finish at Midnight.

The cover charges are £35:00 per person for a standard ticket while children at under the age of 10 is half the price (£17:50) V.I.P tickets are £50:00 per head and children £25: 00 per person. The cover-charge price includes a sumptuous three course meal.

Banda, who is popularly known as Felie B among his peers, however appealed to Malawians and organisations of goodwill for donations saying their contributions will be highly appreciated. He also asked all people and artists in the UK willing and interested to take part in the ceremony to get in touch with the organising committee of the awards.

The Malawi Achievers’ Awards which will be an annual event will honour illustrious and eminent Malawian individuals, charities, institutions, entrepreneurs and philanthropists in the United Kingdom who have invested in building a stronger Malawi and the African continent.

The ceremony is expected to be attended by various Malawian dignitaries, including the High Commissioner of Malawi to the UK, respected scholars and distinguished Friends of Malawi.

The awards that will be bestowed to deserving Malawian individuals, charities and groups for achievements in community development, leadership, entrepreneurship, entertainment and arts, and Education  among others.
