UK posthumously honours Tenthani, Centre of Media Excellence at Poly named after departed journo
United Kingdom has honoured departed journalist Raphael Tenthani as it will open a Raphael Tenthani Centre of Media Excellence at the Polytechnic College of the University of Malawi this year, according to High Commissioner to Malawi Michael Nevin.
Tenthani, who died in a car crash on May 16 2015, worked as a journalist for various local and international news organisations, including British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and Nyasa Times.
UK has named the media centre Raphael Tenthani in recognition of the role he played in relation to promotion of freedom of expression in the country.
The Muckraker, as Tenthani was fondly known for his Muckraking on Sunday column published in The Sunday Times newspaper and Nyasa Times online, was was a global icon with a rare sense of humanity, and a great journalist.
Tenthani’s writing was so unique that he left the reader or listener with no option but admire the craftiness of the author.
Good idea, Nevin, but it will take more than this to replace the Muckraker. I fear that his combination of elegant writing-style, great knowledge and courage, clarity of thinking, may be completely unique in Malawi.
