Uladi gets bail, pleads not guilty: Kwanjana also charged

Peoples Party (PP) acting president Uladi Mussa was on Tuesday afternoon given bail, after spending a night in police cell following allegations he was involved in suspicious naturalisation of 50 foreigners when he was Home Affairs minister.

Mussa, who pleaded not guilty to the abuse of office and other corruption related cases, was told to have a K500,000 surety, he reports to the Anti Corruption Bureau offices every fortnight and surrenders his passport to the Lilongwe Magistrates Court which is hearing the case.

The PP leader  is accused of dubiously issuing passports to 22 Burundians, 16 Rwandese, nine Ugandans and three Tanzanians.

His party, the Peoples Party has already described the state’s move to arrest him as politically inspired, but ACB publicist Eegrets Ndala has dismissed this.

Mussa appeared in court along with assistant chief immigration officer David Kwanjana who is answering similar charges.

Before the bail was granted, ACB prosecutors grilled Mussa on the role he played in the issuance of the passports to the 50 foreigners.

He told the court he followed all procedures as Home Affairs minister and there was nothing wrong.

Former Chief Immigration Officer Hudson Makhwala is also on bail, after being arrested on similar charges.

The matter has been adjourned to a later date.

Should we say ACB has been investigating Uladi Mussa all this time?I think the best strategy for ACB is to investigate the whole corrupt processes at. the Dept of immigration regarding passport issuing to non Malawianns. To me this case is just a cover up of the real issue or simple a witch hunting possibly for sake of diverting peoples mind. That is problem ACB which seems to do something but in a wrong way, manner and time totalling to indecipline and suspitions from some quarters. Believe me Dr Chaponda’s will end in vain. They are always pushed for action rendering them toothless.

Mussa says this arrest is politically motivated. He is forgetting that he got that ministerial post because he is a politician. He has another seat in Parliament which is political in nature. In Malawi it is politicians who make things move faster because of the political power they posses when they are in the ruling party. So Mussa is being handled as a politician because he did this using political influence.

ACB should also investigate who issued 5,000 Malawi Passports to Zimbabweans? Which led to the UK Government withdrawing the visa free entry to the UK.

I hope, no one says there is need of further investigations, until 2019 during election time.

The nine Ugandans and three Tanzanians possing Malawi Passports
should immediately be investigated by security personnel to figure
out if they are Tanganyika agents or not. What are they doing in
Malawi. Spying?

Uganda and Tanzania are friends following the
latter’s help to oust Idi Amin Dada of Uganda in a brief war of
October 1979 – January 1980.
