UMP engages public SMS voting: Phones, dongles up for grabs

The search for headliners for the hyped UMP (Urban Music Party) festival 2013 has reached the final step with the introduction of SMS voting for local urban artists who will front-page the urban arts gathering set for July 7th.

Through Facebook, the public was offered to opportunity to nominate 36 artists and 10 deejays who have been put up for voting through SMS. The list, through the Airtel SMS voting line, 5 artists and 3 deejays will be selected as headliners.

One of the UMP organizing team, Edward Kankhomba said in a statement that people stand a chance to win various prizes just by voting for their favorite artists and Djs through a short code 58181 (Airtel subscribers only). Voting started from June 13th and will end on June 23th.

“Apart from drumming up support for their favorite artists and DJs, those that will send the SMS stand chances of winning fabulous prizes provided by Airtel and UMP. Prizes include Samsung Galaxy S2 smart phones, Airtel dongles, Airtel T shirts, UMP T shirts and UMP Festival,” said Kankhomba.

“Artists are encouraged to woo their fans to vote for them as much as they can. Multiple votes are allowed, so it is up to artists to encourage their loyal fans to vote for them. People should simply send the name of their favorite artist or DJ to 58181”.

Kankhomba explained: “We are currently overwhelmed with the response since the campaigned started. People are voting positively, which signifies how the nation considers the urban music genre. Names of the voted artists and Djs will be announced by Monday next week”.

Urban Music Party (UMP) is a year round project aimed at promoting and celebrating Malawi’s urban culture and creative industry in an effort to contribute to socioeconomic development of the country.
