Umthetho ceremony to highlight Ngoni pride on Hora summit

This year’s Ngoni Umthetho ceremony will be marked by a Hora mountain climb, Nyasa Times has learnt.

Presided over by Paramount Chief Inkosi ya Makosi M’mbelwa V, the largest Ngoni group of Mzimba, will unite for days of cultural reconnaissance at the foot of their historical mountain, Hola.

“We will have our brave warriors, young people, and those who wish, surmount the mountain to the summit. At the top they will announce their triumph in style to an assortment of appreciation led by M’mbelwa,” revealed a source from the Mzimba Heritage Association (Nziha), who are central organisers of the auspicious event.

The annual gathering, characterised by Impi drawn from all parts of the district, guest Impi’s and Ngoni leaders from other parts of Malawi like Ntcheu, Mchinji, and Dowa, foreign Ngoni signatories from Zambia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Swaziland, and Lesotho, will see traditional performances,.

Nziha, adds the source, calls on all Inkosanas and invited guests to do their best to dorn Ngoni cultural gear during the event.

Last Umthetho ceremony M’mbelwa V said the Ngoni of Mzimba are a united, traditionally and cultural nurtured, highly disciplined, and hard workers. Mzimba means body.

This year’s event falls in August and well wishers have been asked to contribute to the event’s budget.

Both local and international companies are welcomed to support the event which is also participated by other traditional leaders and groupings such as Kyungu and the Ngonde of Karonga and Chitipa, Lomwe of Mulhakho, and other key groups.
