Former deputy secretary general and member of the National Governing Council (NGC) of Malawi’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Peter Chiona has died.

The late Chiona died on Wednesday night at Mzuzu Central Hospital due to High Blood Pressure, according to family members.

DPP Spokesperson Hetherwick Ntaba said the party was saddened with the demise of its senior member and politician.

He said during his time, late Chiona served the party “with diligence and maturity and his services would be greatly missed.”

At the time of his death, the deceased was also Board Chairman of Malawi Institute of Management (MIM), a position he has held since March 1, 2006 after replacing Lewis Zimbiri.

Before joining the ruling party, late Chiona held several senior positions in the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) including vice presidency.

Meanwhile, burial arrangements for the late veteran politician will be announced later as the bereaved family is waiting for some family members including some children from abroad.

Late Chiona died aged 76 and hailed from Mwankhulukulu village, TA Mwenemisuku in Chitipa District. He has left behind six children and several grandchildren.
