President Peter Mutharika has expressed shock over the death of former governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM), politician and entrepreneur, Victor Mbewe.

Mbewe, who was until his death Director of Economic Affairs in the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF), on Sunday, September 27 at the CI Cemetery in Blantyre.

Meanwhile, the funeral vigil is being held at Mbewe’s residence at Sunnyside in Blantyre.

President Peter Mutharika has shared his grief after hearing the sad news. He described the late Mbewe as man of high integrity.

He said Mbewe , who owned Dorvic Hotel at Chirimba in Blantyre, will be greatly missed for his love and passion for Malawi.

“He was dedicated, obedient and patriotic for the development of Malawi. As a dedicated member of UDF, he demonstrated leadership skills that will be missed by all goodwill Malawians,” said Mutharika in a tribute statement.

Former president Bakili Muluzi also said he was “saddened” with the death of Mbewe and described him as “inspirational” man.

“I am comforted by the memory of his long, full and inspiring life and so proud of his devotion to helping others as he sought to change the country for the better.”

UDF spokesperson, Ken Ndanga, described Mbewe’s death as a huge loss to the party.

“He was a dedicated, loyal, humble and hardworking member of the party. He contributed greatly during the 2014 elections by selling the party’s manifesto across the country. Such a breed of politicians is rare and UDF will really miss such a great person,” Ndanga said.

Mbewe, a commercial banker almost throughout his career, also formerly worked as Managing Director of Standard Bank when it was called Commercial Bank.

He has also served  in the board of National Insurance Company (Nico) and chairman of the board of directors for state-owned Malawi Savings Bank (MSB).
