Voting commenced on February 1 and this voting window will be closed on February 28, according to TNM Marketing Manager Madalitso Jonazi.

TNM launched Smart challenge competition in October 2015 targeting students to showcase innovation in ICT (mobile) application development.

The competition challenged ICT students to come up with an innovation that would take ICT or mobile application to greater heights, apart from promoting and exposing ICT talents amongst  the youth.

TNM’s Marketing Manager Madalitso Jonazi said submission of entries has so far been completed and 30 entries have made the final list which enters the voting phase.

“The public can now start voting for their favorite application in different categories by sending a participant’s code to 575 or online by visiting our website, smartchallenge.tnm.co.mw,” said Jonazi.

Jonazi said this being the first of its kind in Malawi, TNM is satisfied with entries so far received.

“The response has been encouraging as the competition received participation in all the three categories Smart Kid for pupils, Smart Student for scholars in tertiary education and Smart Community for their institutions,’’ he said.

He said being a Malawian company, TNM is through the Smart Challenge competition geared at exposing hidden talent amongst the youth in as far as the development of ICT is concerned.

“As a telecommunications company, we wish to create an enabling environment for innovations in ICT. It is our continuous hope that this competition becomes the trendsetter for various ICT innovations for youth of the country,” Jonazi emphasized.

Through this competition, winners will travel to USA, Silicon Valley where they will tour Facebook, Google, Apple and Stanford University. Others will win Smart devices and computers for a lab.

The Marketing Manager called on the public to participate in the voting process so that the winning participant should really reflect the will of the people. The public is urged to look at an application that proves socially most relevant.

TNM engaged MHub, Facebook, Google, Opera Software and IBM as technology partners for this initiative.
