Wanderers stun Tigers to step one leg into Airtel Top 8 semis

Mighty Be Forward Wanderers are one step into the semifinals of the Airtel Top 8 Cup after beating Azam Tigers 2-0 in a thrilling encounter played at the Balaka Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Kamwendo: Wanderers Star performer

Both sides showed anger for goals in the opening minutes and displayed a fantastic performance to the satisfaction of spectators.

However, both sides failed to find the back of the net in the first half which hard little scoring opportunities.

But Wanderers started to breath fire in the second half with some fantastic moves orchestrated by the evergreen versatile midfielder Joseph Kamwendo whose five star performance earned him a man of the match accolade.

Jafali Chande broke the dead lock in the 75th Minute after he intelligently connected home a Felix Zulu cross before Kamwendo extended the lead to put the game beyond Azam Tigers reach in the 83rd minute.

Without any doubt, Kamwendo’s 30 metres drive can so far be described as the best goal of the tournament since the Airtel Top 8 Cup commenced on Saturday.

Using his experience, Kamwendo manoeuvred past two defenders before releasing a thunder bolt that left Azam goalkeeper with no chance.

Speaking in an interview after the match, Tigers Coach Patricio Kulemeka admitted that his side came second best.

“We gave our opponents two much respect and we were second on the ball that is why we conceded the two goals but we will go back home to recrify the problems I have noticed” said Kulemeka.

On the other hand, Nomads coach Yasin Osman said they knew their opponents will come hard but praised his charges for playing according to instructions.

Meanwhile, a first Red Card in the Airtel Top 8 was recorded in Wanderers versus Tigers match which went to Nickson Mwase of Tigers after he punched Wanderers striker Jabulani Linje.

Second leg quarterfinal matches will be played this coming weekend.
