Wanderers will not pack the bus -Madeira

Be Forward Wanderers will attack city rivals Azam Tigers in their Airtel Top 8 quarter final first leg and not sit back and defend their 2-0 lead as they chase a place in the semi-finals, Team manager Steven Madeira said on Sunday.

Goals from Jaffali Chande and Joseph Kamwendo in a dominant second-half played at Balaka Stadium on Sunday put the Cup Kings on the brink of qualifying for the semi-finals.

“We’re going to approach the second leg just as any other game, to go out strong and give everything,” Madeira told Nyasa Times ahead of Saturday’s second leg at Kalulu Stadium in Nchalo.

“We’ll see what happens then, but our aim will not change the result changes nothing and we’re going to try to score.”

The prospect of going out to pile more misery on the Kau-Kau boys will be music to the ears Joseph Kamwendo, who was voted man of the match and also tormented the visitors on the middle of the park.

“I feel great and I’m not feeling any vertigo,” said Kamwendo, also popularly known as Shakira.

“This club relishes moments like this and we’re focused on second leg game. Whatever you have achieved in the past you need to keep proving yourself. We may have beaten them in the first leg but it will still be a different game.

“They have their strengths and we have ours, the fact we’ve won today against them doesn’t mean we’re going to get through if we think it does then we’re making a big mistake.”

Tigers coach Patrick Kulemeka said that coming back from 2-0 down to the Nomads at home in Kalulu would be “impossible” for other teams – but not his.

“I’ve told the players it is very difficult, that we are facing the best team in the country, who score goals in every game, but that it is possible,” Kulemeka said

He said, “We’re going to play with all our weapons against a very dangerous side but we’re convinced we can do it.”

Kulemeka also hopes their famously loyal ganyu fans can give them an extra push on Saturday.

Other return games on Saturday will involve Blue Eagles against Kamuzu Barracks at Nankhaka Stadium. The area 30 cops were whipped 4-2 by the soldiers in the first leg at Civo Stadium.

Moyale Barracks will host Mafco FC at Mzuzu Stadium. The Mzuzu based solders clipped the Salima based out-fit 2-0 last Saturday.

Come Sunday, all roads will lead to the old capital city of Malawi, where Nyasa Big Bullets will host Silver Strikers at the Zomba Community Centre ground.

The Peoples Team lost 1-0 in the first leg in Lilongwe.

Dubbed the Airtel Top 8, the showpiece will see the winner carting home a cool K15 million while the runners-up will get a K5 million consolation.

During its launch on 3 March 2017, Airtel managing director (MD) Charles Kamoto said they were focusing on the next level in developing the calibre of sports in the country.

This is not the first time for the number one mobile company in Malawi to sponsor a football cup having sponsored football at grassroot level through the Airtel Rising Stars initiative.

The finals for Airtel Top 8 are scheduled to take place on 3rd June this year in Lilongwe.
