Police in the northern region district of Mzimba are keeping in custody an 18 year old man in connection with murder of his friend’s wife.

Mzimba police spokesperson Sergeant Gift Nyirongo told Nyasa Times on Monday that the suspect Joel Chirwa is alleged to have raped and murdered Milika Mabaso 18 who was a wife to the suspect’s friend.

The deceased was murdered at 9 Miles along the Mzuzu -Lilongwe M1 road.

Nyirongo said her body was discovered buried in a ditch in the Perekezi forest reserve with some body parts eaten by hyenas two weeks later.

The law enforcers also found a used condom at the murder scene which they believe the suspect used in raping the deceased.

Sgt. Nyirongo said the deceased husband Pilirani Zgambo 30 is serving a 2 year sentence at Mzimba prison for theft of a goat.

”Following the prison sentence, the wife decided to go back to her home in Khosolo and the suspect volunteered to escort her.

”But when they reached at 9 Miles the suspect dragged the deceased in Perekezi forest reserve where he raped her twice and then killed her,” said Nyirongo.

According to Nyirongo the police found the suspect after he was caught by members of the community policing for stealing a goat.

The community policing members were surprised that the suspect had women clothes, kitchen utensils in his possession.

And working on a lead, the police took the clothes and kitchen utensils to the deceased’s husband at Mzimba prison who identified the property as belonging to his wife.

During interrogations, the suspect confessed to killing the friend’s wife.

He will answer murder charges contrary to section 209 of the penal code.

Chirwa hails from John Chirwa village, T/A Mzikubola in Mzimba district.

This is a 10th murder case recorded in Mzimba since January this year.
