It looks like the MEC is being pushed by some quarters to increase the number of women MPs but their approach seems Feminist and not in the interest of equality through the Gender lens. Let women compete for positions in our parliament on equal footing as men and nothing more. We had a woman in the presidency, but the way she governed gave Malawians less drive to further elect women in positions of influence. No need to create a fourth vote.

Reduce MPs in cities. Assemblies can adequately cover their work.

1. No democratic country in this world would consider reducing the number of constituencies, when the population is increasing. If anything, the number of MPs should be increasing, definitely, in Malawi, with its exploding population. If you reduce the number of MPs, you would also be increasing the number of constituents in each constituency: thus making “democratic” representation in parliament less than it is at present. That is not acceptable. The principle of “Rep-by-Pop” (Representation by Population) advocates, in a democracy, near equal populations by constituencies; and, equally important, it also advocates reasonable size of the population. 2. The issue… Read more »
