Zimbabwe cocaine mule convicted in Malawi: Pays fine to avoid jail

A Zimbabwean woman arrested three weeks ago in Malawi’s central region border district of Dedza was has been sentenced to one year  imprisonment for attempting to smuggle cocaine which is an illegal drug all over the world.

Zamile Ndhlovu was arrested while on her way out of the country to South Africa on July 22 for attempting to smuggle 2kg cocaine.

But the she escaped custodial sentence after paying fine of K100,000 (about US$ 250) which was an option given by the Dedza Magistrate Court ruling delivered on Monday.

The woman attempted to smuggle the cocaine disguising in cooking oil cartons.

Dedza Police spokesperson Edward Kabango said it was the first case for the Police to arrest a person over cocaine.

“We have arrested people before in connection with chamba (hemp) but for cocaine this is the first case ever at Dedza Border Post,” Kabango said.

He appealed to people against smuggling of illegal substances and drugs such as hemp and cocaine because it is an offence.
