Wananchi joins a growing list of corporates, individuals, relief agencies, NGOs and governments that have so far contributed in raising over Kshs 91 million(US$ 1 million).

“Wananchi Group stands with the people of Malawi during this difficult moment. As a company, we believe in investing and supporting communities where we operate,” said Wananchi Group Chief Executive Officer Richard Alden, speaking from Kenya.

The Kenya Government donated Kshs 91 million and Wananchi Group’s home of entertainment and communication services brand Zuku, donated Kshs 455,000 (US$ 5,000).

Alden said the donation would go a long way in supporting those affected or displaced through the purchase of foodstuff, water, medical supplies and other basic utilities.

The floods have affected a total of 15 out of the 28 districts in Malawi. More than one million people have been affected by the floods which have washed away tens of thousands of houses, destroyed crops, and wiped out livestock in the southern African nation.

“An estimated Kshs 7.3 billion (US$ 81 million) is required to rebuild Malawi following the devastating floods and purchase supplies,” His Excellency Brig. Gen. Marcel Chirwa (Rtd), the outgoing Malawi High Commissioner to Kenya said during a fundraising initiative in Nairobi.

Also present was Robert Hanjahanja, the chairperson of the Association of Malawi in Kenya, a number of corporates and individual well-wishers.

Wananchi Group is the only service provider offering a triple play platform that includes broadband, multi-channel digital television and voice telephony and has been operating in the Malawi market since 2014.

Zuku is a home-grown East African brand under Wananchi Group, established with the aim of making quality home entertainment and communication services accessible to a rapidly growing, choice-conscious African middle class.

Zuku TV has over 100 channels on the Zuku Satellite platform which are developed to resonate with the African audience.
