An angry mob in Mulanje district on Thursday night burnt to death a 24-year-old man, Tenson Master for alleged theft.
The incident happened in Soza village in the district, police have confirmed.
Mulanje police Public Relations Officer, Gresham Ngwira told Nyasa Times, the victim was torched to death after being caught stealing from one of the houses in Soza village.
”On Thursday night the deceased broke into a certain house and stole a cellphone and a blanket,” said Ngwira. ”He was however caught by community members”.
Ngwira said while on the way to Muloza police station, irate people set the accused on fire and watched him writhing to death.
Law-enforcers visited the scene of the incident on Friday morning where they found the body of the victim.
”His relatives ordered the body to be buried immediately”.
Master hailed from Soza village, T/A Njema in the district.
Meanwhile, police have warned the general public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, as that is an offence.
”It is only police who are responsible for investigating and prosecuting those suspected to have broken any law,” added Ngwira.
