A  young man has died after being beaten and set alight by an angry mob in Blantyre  who accused him of stealing the handbag which contained two smart phones, money amounting to K40,000 from a lady at Chinyonga bus stop.

Police confirmed about the gruesome killing  and said the remains of the deceased to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH).

Particulars of the deceased were not independently verified.

Malawi has seen the rising cases of mob justice across the country in recent times.

President Peter Mutharika recently  expressed shock, and spoke out against the plight of mob justice.

The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) Acting national Secretary, Martin Chiphwanya also added its voice to condemn mob justice and warned that people should not take matters into their own hands.

“It is worrisome to note that people have resorted to mob justice whenever the alleged cases of theft, robbery and witchcraft are reported in communities while we have courts and police officers,” Chiphwanya said.

Chiphwanya said law enforcement should make more of an effort to gain public trust so the public can desist from taking matters into their own hands due to distrust of the courts.

The police and courts treat these thieves with kid gloves. The best way is either to kill or torch them alive. This will slowly, but surely eliminate the thieves one by one because the one killed will not come back to haunt the people again, make them kanyenya for stray dogs to feed on.

justice has to be seen by people that it is delivered. Unfortunately our police and courts have in many cases I can site here failed to demonstrate that they can deliver justice hence this inhuman resolution. Unfortunately this reflects badly a failure by the government of the day. The question is where is the Home Affairs minister doing ? I wish the president started sacking non performing ministers
