Brian Banda wins best Talk Show host award: NPL, Zodiak wins best media houses in Misa Malawi awards

Times TV presenter Brian Banda has emerged as Malawi media best talk show host after being presented with an award at this year’s Media Institute of Southern Africa (Misa) Malawi World Press Freedom Day gala awards at the Grand Palace Hotel in Mzuzu.

Banda, former host of Capital FM Straight Talk interview programme, received his award after impressing judges for his Times TV no hold barred interview programmes on Saturday evening.

The presenter worked at State House press officer during former president Joyce Banda reign but reverted to media work after his contract was terminated when JB lost elections last May.

From Times Group, there were also awards for editor Gracian Tukula as newspaper columnist of the year and Agness Mizere (blogger of the year), Gregory Gondwe won Business and Economics Award journalist of the year while Charles Mpaka scooped the Best ICT award. Rachel Mhango was awarded the best maternal health reporter in electronic category.

Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) retained the Electronic Media House of the Year Awards but lost most of other individual awards which Zodiak journalists dominated to new faces from other radios.

Nation Publications Limited retained the Print Media House of the Year accolade.

There were no awards for the online media houses.

Nation journalists also dominated individual awards including Lilongwe bureau chief Samuel Chunga (Overall Winner, Environmental Sustainability and Water and Sanitation—Print), Mzuzu bureau supervisor James Chavula (Hunger and Poverty Award and Tourism Journalist of the Year—Print), sub-editor Kondwani Kamiyala (Education Journalist of the Year, Human Rights Journalist of the Year and Universal Primary Education Award) and senior news analyst Peter Kanjere (Sports Journalist of the Year).

Other awards went to Nation news analyst Rebecca Chimjeka (Investigative Journalist of the Year—Print and Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment), reporters Lucky Mkandawire (Photojournalist of the Year and The Hennox Mazengera Financial Journalist of the Year—Print ), Bobby Kabango (Chichewa Journalist of the Year) and Watipaso Mzungu (Maternal Newborn Health Journalist of the Year—Print and HIV and Aids, Malaria and Tuberculosis).

During the gala, Nation former managing editor Edward Chitsulo, who died in March this year, was honoured post-humously with the Lifetime Achiever Award.
