Bride arrested in Balaka for parading bridal girl naked
Police in Malawi’s eastern district of Balaka are keeping in custody a 20-year-bride for allegedly undressing a 16-year-old bridal girl.
Reports show that the suspect Ethel Nomanda Kachingwe was arrested following a complaint that she undressed the girl who was one of her bridal party at her engagement ceremony.
Confirming the development Balaka Police publicist Sub-inspector Joseph Sauka says the suspect had an engagement early this month and asked the victim to be one of her bridal party.
“Since the victim had no money, the suspect offered to buy her a dress and agreed that the victim will refund the K3, 550.00 afterwards,” says Sauka.
Sauka says after the engagement, the girl took the dress but failed to pay the agreed amount.
“Last Saturday, the suspect met the girl and took her to her house where she undressed her and ordered the girl to parade naked for failing to pay the agreed amount. He was saved by a sympathizer who gave her a Chitenje ,” says Sauka
Sauka says Kachingwe is still in police custody and is to be taken to court soon where she will answer a case of insulting the modesty of a woman which is contrary to section 137(3) of the penal code.
Ethel Nomanda Kachingwe comes from Mponda village, Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka district
