Bullets pip Silver Reserves: Malawi Carlsberg Cup quarter-final line-up complete
Jafali Chande, Mussa Manyenje and Amos Khamula goals were enough for Big Bullets to sail through to the quarter-finals of the Carlsberg Cup with a dominant display against inspired Silver Strikers Reserve on Sunday played at Kamuzu Stadium.
It proved a relatively routine victory for Malawi champions and man-of-the-moment Yamikani Fodya was in another perfect form, setting up two goals in both halves.
Junior Bankers side showed some brilliance with the defence led by Moses Chilongo, Joel Kasuzyo, Dothy Phiri and Samalani Makunganya but Bullets were too superior for them.
Jaffalie Chande gave the home team the first goal through a header before Mussa Manyenje’s second goal.
Despite making several changes to the side that has been playing in the Super League, the Peoples team produced a fluent and effective first-half display, with Dalitso Sailesi and Fischer Kondowe acting as creators-in-chief.
The Peoples team started with Amos Khamula, who fitted in South African bound Chiukepo Msowoya’s boots. Msowoya was serving two yellow cards.
Bullets Burundian Coach Nsazwurimo Ramadan, who was back on the touchline after sorting out his immigration matter, said he was “delighted” with the win and the great performance.
“I am so delighted with the good performance of my side. The win was very important. We need to win Carlsberg Cup,” said Ramadan in a post-match interview with Nyasa Times.
Asked to comment on the rising performance of Fodya, the Bullets head coach who has applied for a post of Malawi national team coach, said: “Yamikani Fodya is one of the best players.”
Ramadan said Fodya has a combination of talent and fighting spirit.
“He plays with passion,” noted Ramadan.
Lyton Mangani, coach for young Bankers, said his charges lost concentration.
“We were a little bit slower in our work and our concentration. We have no complaints, we lost,” h said.
On Saturday, Mighty Be Forward Wanderers, Moyale Barracks, Dedza Young Soccer and lower league side Support Battalion progressed to the quart-final berth of the Carlsberg.
Other teams that reached the quarter-finals are Silver Strikers, Mafco FC and Kamuzu Barracks.
Forward Mapopa Kaunda’s 57th minute’s lucky strike was enough to take Wanderers to the next round of the tournament. Kaunda is fast becoming the Nomads’ ‘saviour’ as he has scored vital goals in four consecutive games.
It was a bad day for Lilongwe giants Civo FC, who were shown the exit door by rookies Support Battalion who claimed a 1-0 victory over them while games involving Azam Tigers and Dedza Young Soccer; and Red Lions and Moyale Barracks had to be decided on penalties.
Dedza Young Soccer booted out the Tigers in post match penalties following one all draw at Kamuzu stadium. The visitors converted four spot kicks through Pachalo Kumilonde, Dave Balaka, Chisomo Mpachika and Amadu Makawa and their goalkeeper saved two Tigers’ spot kicks.
Likewise, Moyale Barracks beat their brothers in arms Red Lions 4-3 following a goalless draw in regulation time. The Mzuzu based soldiers book the space through Khuda Muyaba, Sandres Munthali, Boy Boy Chima and Steve Mkandawire while Loti Mwakisulu, Mphatso Ngwira and Ndawona Limbani converted for Red Lions, who missed the other spot kicks through Innocent Bokosi and Chikoti Chirwa.
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Competitions Manager Gomegzani Zakazaka said they are impressed with the performance of teams which have reached the quarter finals.
Zakazaka assured fans to expect more fireworks in the quarter finals this coming weekend.
The quarter-final line up is as follows:
