Bwaila alumni, Claim Limited, UNICAF University inspire students

The Bwaila Alumni Association on Friday took time to cheer, motivate, and award prizes to graduating students of Bwaila secondary School in Lilongwe alongside UNICAF University and publishers, Claim Limited.

The colourful ceremony was marked by presentation of certificates to the graduating Form 4 students, performances and, most importantly, awarding of various prizes from the Alumni and the other two sponsors, Claim Limited and UNICAF University.

What carried the day most was the awarding of prizes to best students in various areas and class subjects, and to overall best students in academics.

Two boys, Reuben Simfukwe from East Shift and Nixon Mbewe from West Shift, impressed everyone as they scooped five awards each from each of the three sponsors for beating the rest in their respective shifts in four different subjects, and the fifth award for emerging overall best students in academics in their respective shifts.

For every subject they succeeded in, each of the two, together with every best student in various disciplines and subjects, went away with an expensive wristwatch from the Bwaila Alumni; MK5, 000 each from Claim Limited; and UNICAF branded T-Shirt from UNICAF University.

But for emerging the overall best, Simfukwe and Mbewe got an extra wristwatch each from the Bwaila Alumni, an extra K5, 000 each from Claim Limited, and, most importantly, a state-of-the-art tablet each from the UNICAF University.

“I’m speechless. I knew I could be the best in these subjects but I did not expect to be rewarded in this way. This is wonderful and very encouraging,” said Simfukwe, 17, who emerged overall best in his East shift by beating the rest in Mathematics, Physical Science, Biology and Geography.

On the other hand, 17-year-old Mbewe of West Shift emerged to the top in Physical Science, Biology, Geography and History.

Smiling from ear to ear, he attributed his success to the dedication of the teachers at Bwaila which he said always stimulated him to do his best in class.

Guest of honour to the event was Bwaila Alumni Association Vice Chairperson, Charles Msusa, and in his remarks, he encouraged the students to commit themselves to their studies for a happy future.

Msusa, who bowed out of Bwaila campus in 1982 and he is now a successful engineer, said he was very impressed with Simfukwe and Mbewe’s “strange” performances and that he saw a great potential in the two.

“The most impressive thing is that the two have not just emerged the best in one area alone – and it’s not very common to have one being best in Sciences and other areas as the two have done. This is very impressive,” said Msusa in an interview after the event.

He said the Bwaila Alumni Association, which is a vast body that includes all outgoing students from the 70s to date, would do all it could to assist the institution in any way possible.

Meanwhile, the association is mobilizing resources to procure computers for the school and to also have the Alumni’s old institution painted.

Bwaila Secondary School Head Teacher, Anita Kaliu, hailed the Alumni Association and the other two sponsors, Claim Limited and UNICAF University, for their support.

She advised the students to abide by the rules and regulations of the Malawi National Examination Board during the exams.

Well done boys and well done fellow alumni, Claim and Unicaf. It reminds me of the great feeling I had when I scooped the best in maths and physical science and the most hardworking awards 24 years ago at the same institution. This is the beginning of great life for the awardees.
