Cash-strapped Malawi withdraws from 2015 Africa Cup of Nations

It might sound like a joke but it is real. The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) through its president Mc Millan  Walter Nyamilandu has announced that the Malawi football team will not take part in the 2015 African Cup of Nations finals (Afcon).

Nyamilandu told a local daily that the withdrawal is due to lack of sponsorship from the Malawi government.

According to the FAM President, the government assured the association that the funds will be available before asking them to choose between participating in the Under 20 Youth Championship or the Senior Afcon finals.

“It is a painful decision but as I said, there was little we could do because it was government that assured us that funding would be available for Under 20 competition [through the youth and sports minister Enoch Chihana] and now the tune has changed and they asked us to choose” Nyamilandu is quoted saying.

“We have no choice but to forego the nation’s cup because government advised us to priotise.

“We have therefore practiced the under 20 for the sake of development and also the consequences [of not being there] would be far reaching since we already confirmed participation in the CAF Youth Championship.”

This will be the first time for the Flames to miss the continental competition after over four decades.
