Chakwera names MCP shadow cabinet: Kabwila shadows Kaliati

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Rev Dr Lazarous Chakwera has named a  20-member shadow cabinet  with few surprises among his chosen lieutenants.

Chakwera claimed that the Shadow Cabinet will deepen and strengthen their engagement on the policy front as they continue to look for the best ways of serving all Malawians while “we are in the opposition”.

The MCP leader further said they are committed to offering the nation the best they can through constructive policy engagement with the current Government and their counterparts in the opposition.

“Let me invite you all to interact with the members of the Shadow Cabinet and channel your policy advice to us. The appointment is with immediate effect,” said Chakwera, who hosted a team of MCP supporters from Mchinji calling themselves “Friends of Chakwera” on Tuesday.

On this note, Chakwera said it was refreshing to note that MCP supporters were still passionate not only for the party, but also the nation at large.

“These are volunteers that contributed quite a lot towards the May 20 polls and are amazingly ready to continue supporting our agenda.

“I am encouraged that despite having been disappointed with the May 20 poll results the spirit of our supporters has never faltered but instead energizes more for our struggle for a just and prosperous Malawi,” said Chakwera.

In the  shadow cabinet, Chakwera who is also leader of opposition in parliament becomes shadow  commander in chief of  Malawi Defence Force and the Malawi Police Services,. He will also be spokesman for the party on Parastatals and Disaster Preparedness.

Chakwera rewarded veteran MCP parliamentarian Joseph Njobvuyalema with a shadow ministerial of Finance, Economic Planning & Development.

Is this so cajoled shadow cabinet based on merit? Can Njovuyalema be minister of finance, really? Just because he has been in parliament for a long time does he have what it takes to be minister of finance? This man was senior clerical officer in government, so does he have the right qualification to steer the country’s economy? It is just as good MCP didn’t win, we were going to see mediocre ministers. Similarly the tourism portfolio is given to someone simply to occupy the position and yet tourism in Malawi can easily be a number one economic sector, but… Read more »

Mr. Civic Educator,
If Malawi had a 100 people who were able to put things right the way you have done, then Malawi could be a nice country to call my nation. I have really liked your explaination to the issue and I request all readers to accept this point. I commented earlier on the topic wrongly coz I did not have this statistics of MCP MPS by region. Your thumb-up Sir/Madam I salute you!

This is not good enough. MCP should be the real government, not shadowing anybody. An injustice has been perpetrated on the citizens of this country. Unfortunately it is impossible to correct it until the next election, so people have accepted ”defeat”.But we will not accept shadows when the people know whom they voted for!!!

Eeiish, kumvetsa kwa Shadow Cabinet Kwavutatu apa. Shadow cabinet=Party’s Spokespersons in Parliament on particular issues like Health, Finance, Education etc.

Therefor you can not have a non parliamentarian because he is not allocated a seat in Parliament.
You can not have a Parliamentarian or Member from another political party, because a Party does not appoint another party’s member as its spokesperson

Therefore, Chakwera is not Nepotistic

Nepotistics, you know them, because they have everything at their disposal, but they can not use that. They choose to narrow their choices.
