Chakwera wins MCP primaries: Upbeat in face of Malawi 2014 polls

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Lazarus Chakwera on Tuesday overwhelmingly got endorsed as  the party’s candidate for a parliamentary seat in Lilongwe after beating six other aspirants setting the tone for the May 20 2014 Tripartite Elections.

The party conducted the primaries at Kasiya where Chakwera, who is also the party’s 2014 presidential candidate, amassed 261 votes from eligible party members while Elesani Zokochera got 3 votes, Samuel Abalekana 3, Jolex Malikaya 6, Rexton Mitambo Bondo 9, Bryson Majoni 13 and Kanthusi Chimutu got 35 votes.

Chakwera  said he was happy to win in a contest other than going unopposed.

He said tough contents excite him, saying his convention win was most exciting contest and is upbeat of sailing through in another tough contest for the country’s hot seat in May, 2014.

He said since MCP has been in the opposition from 1994, there will be a reversal of fortune for the party at the polls in the next year’s general elections.

Chakwera is also upbeat about his party’s prospects for a parliamentary majority.

He said the MCP government would have a vision of how things can be done to improve the lot of Malawians and uplift the country’s economy.
