Change title: Dr Uladi Mussa celebrates doctorate honour from Cypress University

Peoples Party (PP) acting president Uladi Mussa is this Saturday celebrating the honorary doctorate degree  conferred on him by  from Cypress University of the United States of America.

Now
Uladi: PP president now is Dr

An excited Mussa confirmed that he received a letter from the Kansas based university that he would get an honarary doctorate in Political Leadership.

“They did research and found out that I am the deserving politician for this honarary PhD. This is an honour to me, my family and my party,” said Mussa who sounded over the moon.

His highest academoic qualification is Malawi School Certificate of Education which he obtained at Salima Secondary School.

Mussa thanked the university for confering him the honarary degree, saying it was exciting that he was getting the degree whilst still young.

“Our universities should emulate this, they should give the honourary degrees to deserving people not people who are tired. This will fatten my CV,” he said.

Mussa started his career as United Democratic Front lawmaker then regional governor for the centre in the 1990s and has since served in various cabinet portfolios in Bakili Muluzi, Bingu wa Mutharika and Joyce Banda administrations.

“ My hard work and tenacity has been greatly rewarded. I have always been a firm believer in hard work and I am extremely grateful for the recognition,” said Mussa.

There are 193 people in this country who hold one of the highest honors or titles to which any Malawian can aspire: “Honorable”. This is a title that is conferred on every Member of Parliament as soon as he or she has been elected – and before they have done anything to deserve it. It is conferred in the expectation that each MP will work honestly, conscientiously, and honorably to improve the legislation under which Malawi is governed. If our MPs would try harder to deserve their title, this would be a better country for every Malawian. The Malawi Constitution,… Read more »

And it you the media who pamper these people by always addressing them as “Dr”. Can you stop this nonsense of identifying anyone with an honorary PhD as Dr please??? Just look at your headline Nyasatimes “Call him Dr Uladi Mussa” – do you think these people will stop crying for these PhD with such kind of pampering you are giving them? Once the media stops that, no one will be excited with these things! If you agree, I hereby give you a draft list of those you must stop addressing as Dr: 1. Joyce Banda 2. Ben Phiri, personal… Read more »

You people don’t seem to understand, and it appears your thinking is dazed with vendetta for some individuals and their affiliations. This is an honorary degree. Are you saying people should not be honored for what somebody thinks is a great achievement? If you think someone has not achieved anything dignifying, that is your own problem, and don’t impose your malice on people who have spotted honorable feats in some individuals! The British honorary system even goes further by knighting achievers with accolades such as “Sir”, and there should be nothing wrong with this. Most of you have mentioned JB as… Read more »

Boko, you have completely missed the point with your useless barking! We are not against people being awarded honourary degrees! In fact, I would also love to get one (but from a reputable university on a good cause) – but what we are against is this behaviour of addressing them as Dr – that is not acceptable with honourary degrees! The academic rule is that the institution that awarded that person the degree can address them as Dr – not any Jim and Jack! Barack Obama has several honourary degrees – you will never hear the American media and the… Read more »

What a shame!! Celebrating mediocrity. Do you know what it takes to earn these monikers…ask PhD holders who have toiled for a minimum of three years to earn such an accolade. It is a long and lonely journey no matter what field you are doing…I can see there is current obsession of titles and inclination to claim them among the Malawian politicians, a symptom of deep seated mediocrity performance and identity crisis.

PP ndiye ndichipani chamanthongo bwanji? Just imagine: JB president with MSCE as highest qualification obtained from St Mary’s, Uladi Mussa , vice president with MSCE as highest qualification obtained from Salima Sec School, Kamlepo Kalua, second vice president with MSCE as highest qualification obtained from Mitundu secondary school. Now, what do you expect from such low grade leaders: Phd for JB, Phd for Uladi and next year a pHd for Kamlepo. Vivant Malawi!
