Chihana accuses DPP of stifling federalism debate
Son to the Malawi’s fallen pro-democracy hero Chakufwa Tom Chihana, Enock, who is also leader of the now tiny opposition Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) is accusing the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of by-passing democratic principles of free debate on issues of national importance such as federalism.
Speaking to Nyasa Times on Friday, Chihana asked DPP led government to provide a conducive environment for the federalism debate.
“It is unfortunate that we are seeing DPP using chiefs and other government apparatus to stifle the debate on federalism,” he said, adding:”Go to the north now you will see almost nothing to point at. There is completely no development, and go to the South you will be surprised to see enormous development taking place there.”
Chihana said the country needs federalism for equitable distribution of resources in the country.
But DPP spokesperson Francis Kasaila trashed Chihana’s claims describing him as a frustrated and misguided politician trying to find a survival tool.
“Chihana is a frustrated politician. He was being treated by People’s Party as Second Vice President. Chihana was moving on convoy and he could be happy to see PP ruling until now so that he could have continued enjoying the benefits of PP regime,” said Kasaila.
Kasaila said the President has opened the federalism debate to the general public so that they can discuss without any interference.

Both Chihana and Kasaila are fools. Enock Chihana has never done anything for the north even while he was in Govt. Infact he strangled the region. Pano mwasauka bwana ndiye mukufuna polowera kuti akuwoneni. Kasaila and your masters dont dare strangle federalism. Keep bribing chiefs but know that even greedy chiefs cannot stand in our way towards federalism. As for those of you fools who keep calling atumbuka names, just wait and watch what we ate capable of doing even if you fail to support the cause out of your greed. Federalism is not about atumbuka rather viable and concrete… Read more »
Let us be responsible when discussing issues of this nature (federalism). Not by way of sarcasm as Atumbuka mulipo angati kumpotoko? Kamuzu Banda spoke against federalism because there was PAN-AFRICANISM at that time. I would suggest that those that are talking about federation today which topic was begun by His Excellency The President APM during the change of governing system from single party to multi partyism should give those that don’t understand the meaning of PAN-MALAWINISM. His Excellency was concerned by the belief that Malawi should be ruled equally by all Major tribes in Malawi. We believe that the south… Read more »

Nanga chimene mukuchedwetsera ndi chani? Mukungotikakamirira bwanji?
Let’s debate fedo collectively without pointing a finger at individuals. He might have a point but he should not be stopped because he has a blood in the north,no.Not all northerners support federalism as is being viewed by many and so are other regions.PAC has taken a very positive stand on the matter by engaging the public through which strengths and weaknesses of the system are likely to be exposed.Through these debates,Malawians will judge for themselves if the system suit them.Everyone is entitled to be heard but in the right manner
I think each one of the two are right. But let people decide without influence, buying of leaders.
Enock Chihana, stop crying like a baby!Act now!We have heard more than enough of talking and weeping.
