Chirambo death overshadows Bullets exit in CAF Champions League

The Peoples Team, whose defender Douglas Chirambo died a few hours before the game after a long illness, bowed out 5-1 on aggregate having lost the first round, first leg 4-0 in Khartoum.

Sunday’s match experienced low patronage due to gate fee rise from K1000 to K2000 in the open stands.

Wearing black arm bands, the Bullets kicked-off the match on a high note as they kept the visitors on a tight rope but they striking force was blunt.

Jaffalie Chande and Tigzowere Kumwenda were left with the mantle to score goals but they kept chasing their own shadows as David Simbo guarded AL-Hilal defence jealously.

The game exploded to life after the break when the Bullets snatched the lead through James Chilapondwa’s 74th minute penalty, awarded after Seyifu Masawi’s handball.

However, the lead was short-lived. It was wiped out two minutes later by Al Hilal’s super substitute Frank Boubacar’s neat finish.

Meanwhile, Blantyre fans will pay their last respects for Chirambo Monday  April 6 at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

Thereafter Lilongwe fans will also pay their last respects at his sister’s house in Area 14 before proceeding to Rumphi, where he will be finally laid to rest on Tuesday
