Chisi hits at Chakwera for branding Mutharika failure
Leader of a tiny Umodzi Party , John Chisi has sarcastically asked Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera to question his own leadership style before describing President Peter Mutharika’s as failed.
Chisi described Chakwera as a hypocrite, saying he excused himself from a news conference organised by small parties just to hold his own presser same time.
“He told us that as leader of opposition he could not leave parliament just to see him holding his own press conference same time and day we were holding the joint press conference,” said the angry sounding Chisi.
He said Chakwera’s anger and bitterness should not be vented on Mutharika.
“His speech was full of personal anger and bitterness…his speech was for personal political capital not to address national issues,” he said.
In his speech, Chakwera blasted Mutharika for failing to deal with economic, political and social problems, saying the Malawi leader lives in his own fantasy “Mutharika Republic.”
Political scientist Mustafa Hussein said it was commendable that opposition political parties were coming together.
“If they are not united, they would be weak,” said Hussein.
The eight small parties led by Sam Mpasu of New Labour Party held the news conference after Mutharika did not respond to their request to meet them and offer him solutions to the many challenges the country is facing.
Presidential spokesperson Mgeme Kalirani said Mutharika would invite the opposition leaders when his diary is free.
