Chithope Moyo convicted for corruption

The Lilongwe Magistrate court has slapped Adamson Chithope Moyo, Director of Administration at Balaka District Council, with a one year-jail term for corrupt practices.

Chithope Moyo was arrested in 2008 by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for corruptly receiving ‘monetary reward’.

The bureau had received a complaint that Chithope Moyo, who was also Acting District Commissioner for the Assembly, had corruptly received undisclosed amount of money as a reward for selling a 15 tonne Scania truck at a reduced price of K1 million. The truck was part of deceased estate.

He was taken to Balaka Magistrates Court and later Zomba Magistrates Court. The case was transferred to Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court on request from the defence team.

Moyo was charged with one count of corrupt practices by public officer and two counts of abuse of office contrary to Section 24(1) and 25B(1) of the Corrupt Practices Act respectively.

He was also charged with one count of giving false information contrary to Section 122 of the Penal Code.

Initially, the Lilongwe Magistrate sentenced him to three years imprisonment with hard labour on the counts under the Corrupt Practices Act and one year for the count of giving false information.

The sentences were to run concurrently. However,  the court suspended the sentences to twelve months (one year).
